Julie Ellis Artist

After a week of unprecedented changes in our lives it has not been a creative time for me or anyone. However, as always in my life it is the thing which I need to do to clear my mind and pull me away from any negative thinking.

I was lucky enough to be able to get to London just before everything closed down. I visited a few of my favourite painting at the National gallery and the Portrait Gallery two days before closure. I am always drawn to the later paintings of Turner. It is not so much the depictions of land and sea but the colour, process and marks on the canvas. I rarely stand directly in front of the work as I always find myself peering in from the side trying to catch the light at an angle where I can see brush or palette knife indentations. Margate from the sea 1835-40 and Rain, Steam and Speed are two of my favourites which I go and see like old friends along with the Caravaggio in room 32.
