I came across Avis Newman – English painter and sculptor as I was researching publicly engaged practice for another project, drawn by the aesthetic and curious about the artist’s inspiration and relationship with materials. Newman’s practice is led by her drawing practice. Her work investigates intuition and that of the subconscious through contemplative large-scale, minimalist drawings on un-stretched canvas – usually pinned directly to the gallery walls.
