Artist’s statement 150wds ish

Materials, process, and concepts are intrinsically linked, using oil paint, charcoal, and clay to transform three-dimensional matter onto a two-dimensional surface. Materials which have an extensive history of documenting communicating ideas and histories for future generations. The blending of notion and action into aesthetic object.

Certain objects have the potential ability to ground one in a particular time and place, eliciting memories of people, places, and experiences from the past. I have a fascination with personal stories, banal relatable experiences, sharing perspectives, similarities, and differences for me is an important part of being human. This work reflects personal memories associated with twelve such objects which have been meticulously deconstructed, archived, measured, and documented revealing much more than narrative. What unfolded was an unexpected sensory and meaningful encounter, the result of which is abstracted and multidimensional, open to interpretation, an imagined still life which may prompt the viewer to reflect on the objects they are the keeper of.

What is it to hold something, to keep to bear, sustain, contain, bind cling to, to keep or maintain a grasp on something? Perhaps a need to not let go, to maintain one’s position against opposition or inevitability. To remain attached, faithful, or steadfast. To hold is equally both physical and cerebral.
