Essay Tutorial with Mark– Transcript – 4th May 2020

Connections with your own practice will be implicit in many ways. The essay is not necessarily a place to talk about your work. More use full to use the time to discuss other works and engage with them. Use artists to ways of discussing elements which may be applicable to your work and the parallels will be evident without you spelling them out. That’s more realistic in terms of the word count. Quote Frankenthaler. Maybe Patrick Heron or Howard Hodgkin. Take a bit of time without thinking about the essay, just write and then put aside, do another, maybe athirst. Come back to notes and make connections. Find a route through it that way. Think about how you pull together elements of drawing (practical) and how you annotate and photograph and pull together reflective thoughts. Look for echoes from your notes after you have written. It likely that the way you examine the discussed artwork that you will find intuitive in there. It may feel like three pieces of writing but pull things together to link them up.

Maybe write about a piece of music? Something improvised? Something with an openness.
