Objects –

When a dreamer can reconstruct the world from an object

that he transforms magically through his care of it,

we become convinced that everything in the life of a poet

is germinal.

Gaton Bachelard – The poetics of Space

Still reading through the Bachelard text where every so often I stop and digest and an idea appears. I have been avoiding the obvious interior spaces I see every day in my home. Sensing that it was a mundane and uninteresting visual to focus on and instead focusing on a more abstract way of working using the clay as a medium to explore intuitive notions of that which is internal/inside. This week I was sketching inside and noticed how the page beneath is visible through the paper. This reminded me of Frida Kahlo.  I am reading the diary of Kahlo at the moment where a complete reproduction of her final diary (the latter ten years of her life) is published in its entirety. The spillage of ink which soaks through the paper is abstracted by Kahlo and incorporated into each page. The paper is thin and the words read backwards on each previous page from the one before. The materiality of the book can be experienced in this modern publication. The materiality of my drawings could be seen in the poor quality paper and something which I utilised to abstract the drawing. Using a torn viewfinder I was able to find interesting and overlapping imagery tracing the images below on to the paper above through the viewfinder. I then made small to scale oil paintings from this material. Making sure to limit my pallet avoiding the tendency I have to contrast and instead focus on form and line which unusually for me in this process is geometric in places and bleeds off from the edge of the support.

Work in progress…
