Notes:

Monet: ‘Water lilies after’ 1916 Oil on Canvas – Verging on abstraction. Painterly, textured and gestural non-precise mark making. Visible layering of textured impasto.

Mark Rothko: (untitled (Red, Black, Orange and Pink on Yellow) 1954 Oil paint, egg and glue on canvas. Black band less usual in Rothko’s work. Room of paintings: intended for a restaurant commission and deemed too dark and somber so didn’t deliver. Interestingly displayed in a dimly lit space.

Jeram Patel: Burning laminated wood. Plywood. 1060’s. Interested in the physical properties of the materials and how it changed through his interventions. Rejected colour and representation. Made a strong connection with painting.

Shozo Shimamoto: Japanese artist. Layers of pasted newspapers. White and blue hints. Layers reveal beneath. Delicacy and violent action of piercing the surface.

Ben Nicholson: Still life. Oil and graphite on canvas. Overlapping forms. ? re-working. Rubbing down, revealing, over painting and layering translucent washes.

Yinka Shonibare: Nod to the input to our society of second generation immigrants, Names to each book printed onto traditional fabrics. Culture and history. Cultural appropriation. National identity. This is an ongoing piece – online.
